The former Iceland spar mine at Helgustaðir, which produced the mineral from the 17^th to early 20^th centuries, was one of the most famous in the world. Located somewhat east of town, the mine is reached by a foot trail and is now protected as a natural monument. 

The mine is located a short distance from Eskifjörður town, on the northern side of the fjord, and has a walking path leading to it.
