Iceland Spar Mine

One of the largest in the world

The former Iceland spar mine at Helgustaðir, which produced the mineral from the 17th to early 20th centuries, was one of the most famous in the world. Located somewhat east of town, the mine is reached by a foot trail and is now protected as a natural monument. 

The mine is located a short distance from Eskifjörður town, on the northern side of the fjord, and has a walking path leading to it.
