Gallerí Snærós

International art, pottery, crafts and jewellery.

Behind the art gallery, Gallerí Snærós, are the artists and husband and wife, Sólrún Friðriksdóttir and Ríkharður Valtingojer along with their daughter Rósa Valtingojer and son-in-law, Zdenek Paták. The gallery was established in 1985 by Sólrún and Ríkharður who ran it at first but over the years Rósa joined in the management.

Although the gallery itself may be small the art within it is very big, so to speak. Over the years the family has gained reputation for their outstanding work of art, whether it being Sólveig's textile work, Ríkharður's mezzotint graphic work, Rósa's pottery or Zdenek Paták's visual arts.

The family's jewellery making has also attracked some well deserved attention, where Sólrún and Ríkharður seek to celebrate nature with felted sheep's wool and Icelandic rocks. The family's artistic creativity doesn't end there so one could without a doubt recommend visiting this talented family in their gallery.

One of the most popular works in Gallerí Snærós is a collection of ceramic birds that Rósa started working on only 13 years of age. Each bird is sculpted by hands by the artist herself and are made out of earthenware, underglaze, glaze and iron in the legs. This bird collection contains few popular icelandic bird species. The birds are: Puffin, Common Loon, Northern Gannet, Raven, Snow Bunting and Eurasian Golden Plover which is without a doubt the most beloved bird in Iceland since it represents the spring.

Open daily from 11:00 - 17:00 from June 1st to September 30th and by agreement at other times of the year.
